With the wave of technology in this generation, computers have taken over the age of writing. Instead of hand written book reports and general note taking, most people use their personal computers, laptops, or even phones instead of a typical pen or pencil. It does make sense that it is much easier to create something with the click of a keyboard and the heavenly touch of a backspace button for all the flubs. Even with all this technology, you would be surprised how the cross fountain pen industry still thrives. Those of us who enjoy writing elegantly with a fountain pen are not necessarily a dying breed but more of an underground one.

In the past, writing was considered an art. In ancient times civilizations would take great care in their messages. Each stroke of a brush or writing instrument was like a painting. Ancient China is a great example of how they took great care in their writing. Even today we use Chinese lettering sometimes as a decoration or a piece of art because of its beauty. Even when you look back a few generations at how people use to write in letters and journals, some of the most elegant and carefully written words that you will ever see are in these. These days, we are very lax and informal with out written letters. Cheap pens have created ugly written letters and journals. It almost makes you WANT to use a computer instead when you have to deal with that.

This art need not be lost upon this generation. The use of a quality fountain pen still has its place. Penning a personal card for someone special, or perhaps writing a beautiful message on a postcard that someone will want to have for many years, the quality strokes and lines of a fountain pen is not something you can duplicate with your .99 c mass produced disposable pen.

We use to believe that a person’s style of penmanship was a reflection of their personality and character. There is even a method of analyzing the characteristics of ones writing to figure out many things about them. Your mood shows up easily in the calm lines or hard pressured strokes. Emotion not only goes into the words but in the very ink itself.

If we reflect our personality in our writing, it would be a good idea to use something that will show exactly how you feel. A Cross Fountain Pen is something that is made by a quality company that takes great care in their products for the fountain pen aficionado. Using their instruments will leave a great impression on whoever receives the message. You can easily look professional with just a switch of pens from a typical disposable to a quality cross fountain pen. You should give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

The oldest known fountain pen that still survives today dates back to the early 1700s and was developed in France after thousands of years of writing with quill pens. Over the next hundred years, several new fountain pens were developed and patented, including a half-quill half-metal pen. Then, in 1831, the first self-filling fountain pen was developed by a man named John Jacob Parker – and the Parker Pen dynasty was born.

The design of the fountain pen was based upon the observation that a bird’s quill contained a hollow channel that made a natural reservoir for ink. Drawing on that observation, inventors attempted to produce the same effect with a man-made pen that would hold more ink and not require constant dipping into an inkwell.

After years of experimentation with pens that leaked badly or otherwise failed to perform to satisfaction, a man named Lewis Waterman – the father of another writing implement empire – hit upon the idea of adding an air hole between the nib and the base of the pen to solve the problems of leakage and splattering.

Over the next century, a number of new innovations were made in the field of self-filling fountain pens, including designs that involved button fillers, lever fillers, click fillers, matchstick fillers, and coin fillers. In the 1950s, the pre-filled, disposable ink cartridge was introduced.

To this day, modern fountain pens are sold as classic writing instruments, and antique and rare fountain pens enjoy a booming market among avid collectors

Each fountain pen is unique in that its nib is designed to flex and wear down gradually based upon the writing pressure exerted on it, thus accommodating the user’s style. As a result, fountain pen owners tend to guard their writing instruments closely, loath to allow anyone else to write with their pens, and often have their initials engraved on them.

If you have a pen that you use on a regular basis, like anything, it will need maintenance on occasion. It can be anything from a simple refilling of the ink to perhaps something more serious. A lot of the problems with a pen can be fixed on your own if they are simple problems. Some parts are easily replaced and others need more expert hands.

Honestly, it depends on the pen and the knowledge of the individual. If you are unsure about how to go about something, best thing is to get in contact with cross and ask them directly. Do not attempt something on your own if you aren’t sure, you could make the problem worse.

If you are dealing with cross pens, cross recommends that you send it back for evaluation if you are having any of the following problems.

The finish has become tarnished

You have a Sprung Clip

Any leaking near the nib

A loose fitting cap

If the Nib is damaged

If you are getting poor ink flow in your Fountain Pen you can try to soak the nib and the front section overnight in lukewarm water. Adding a drop or 2 of dish soap helps too. The next day just clean it thoroughly with the converter.

Ball Point Pen Issues

If the refill retracts into the barrel – Try Turning the cap counter clockwise to retract the refill point. Then remove the cap and tighten the refill clockwise. If the Refill isn’t working at all correctly, cross recommends you send it in for evaluation.

If you have a Desk set with a broken pen holder assembly that is covered and should be sent back in for repairs. However, with a broken or chipped base it can be repaired but is not under warranty and will be extra. Replacement pens can be purchased through cross.

If you have a pencil through cross that too can have its issues over time and can be fixed by cross support.

If the lead is not coming out try turning the cap clockwise to put the pencil into the writing position. Check and see that there is lead in the cassette.

If the Lead is retracting when putting any pressure on it, it probably means the current piece is too short and you will need to click out the old piece and advance another into position.

If you are unable to retract the led, it may mean there are two pieces stacked on top of one another, this happens occasionally and is fixed by removing the current piece and then shaking the pen to loosen them up, and then just start another piece and all should be well.

If you are having any other issue and or your pen or pencil is damaged, you should contact Cross support and get their advice about whether it is an issue you can fix or if it needs to be sent in for repairs.

We do not represent Cross or any of its employees, we only wish to help others with their Pen needs. Contact Cross directly for questions.
